Northwest Girlchoir performs its holiday concert “Noël by the Numbers” at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church, 7500 Greenwood Ave. N.
Noël by the Numbers highlights Northwest Girlchoir’s most advanced choirs – Amabile, Vivace, Amore, and Ensemble – in an elegant program featuring a unique collection of songs that draw attention to both the subtle and prominent references to “numbers” in holiday music. The program includes the dramatic and rhythmical “Magnificat” from Bethesda Evensong by Gwyneth Walker, as well as the poignant “Maria Walks Amid the Thorn” by Andrew Carter. Well-loved works such as “Candlelight Carol” by John Rutter and “Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day” by John Gardner are featured alongside classics like “Duo Seraphim” by Tomas Luis de Victoria, the 16th century Spanish composer, and “Prayer” from the fairy tale opera Hansel and Gretel by 19th century composer Engelbert Humperdinck. The program includes a variety of carols, including the beautiful Austrian “Snow Carol” (Still, Still, Still), arranged by Audrey Snyder, and the ancient Catalan carol “Fum, Fum, Fum,” arranged by Carol Sims. At evening’s end all four choirs will come together to sing several pieces including “One Candle” by Andy Beck.
