While most Seattle neighborhoods cling tightly to their own identities, North Seattle’s Greenwood and Phinney Ridge neighborhoods also celebrate what brings them together.

Sharing a slice of land between Ballard and Green Lake and a main drag of Greenwood Avenue to the north and Phinney Avenue to the south, the two neighborhoods offer a wide variety of shopping and services, from burgers and coffee joints to hip clothiers and cocktailers and antiques.

There is no single word or phrase to describe this unique melding of diverse neighborhoods, but the former Greenwood-Phinney Chamber of Commerce was close with its proud slogan, “Just a little off center.”

Both neighborhoods are experiencing growing pains, from new condominium complexes to long-time stores moving or going out of business due to rising rents. And that means residents are becoming more involved in their communities, wanting to have a say in what this new urban village will look like.

That’s the idea behind PhinneyWood.com. It’s a daily news blog that’s designed to be a community resource — a place where you can learn about the changes in your neighborhood and discuss the issues that are important in Phinney and Greenwood.

Our friends at MyBallard asked us to start PhinneyWood in July 2008 when it became clear Phinney Ridge and Greenwood needed a daily news source. We — Dale Steinke (who has 20 years of journalism experience) and Doree Armstrong (a freelance writer) — live in Phinney Ridge with our young son (otherwise known as the PhinneyWood Kid), just a few streets away from Greenwood. We are experienced journalists with a long history in print, TV and the web.

In 2010, we won a national Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists for our coverage of the Greenwood arsons, thanks in no small part to devoted readers who supplied numerous tips and kept us motivated to stay on top of the story. Thank you.

If you see something interesting in the neighborhood, please let us know. It could be a new business, road construction, graffiti sighting, lost pet or an upcoming event. Just drop us a note at tips@phinneywood.com.
