The Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) will lead a walking tour of Aurora Avenue/Highway 99 called “Aurora: Life on Seattle’s Mother Road,” from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21.
It’s part of MOHAI’s Neighborhood History Tour series, and will “explore the history of this once important Puget Sound lifeline and illustrate how it has affected the growth of our neighborhoods.”
Thousands of drivers use Aurora Avenue every day: it’s a vital traffic corridor. Yet few understand how a city street can be as controversial as this one. Aurora plays host to a broad and colorful spectrum of Seattle characters. It’s been called “visual garbage.” But it is also an essential place to people who live in and love, Seattle. Historian Roger van Oosten will give an informative, witty, and fun tour of the heart of Aurora, offering insight into why this historic Mother Road is vital to Seattle’s past, present and future.
Cost is $15 for MOHAI members; $20 general. You can buy tickets online. Meet at the corner of Stone Avenue North and North 90th Street. The tour covers approximately two-and-a-half miles.
