Week of July 29th: Monuments
We will look at monuments around the world, discuss why we build monuments and how monuments are placed in a landscape. We will then talk about what is important to us as individuals, as a community, as a country and in terms of all people. Then the students will choose an idea, maybe something that we use in daily life, a person or an event that is important to them or our communities and design a monument. Another important aspect of designing a monument is where it is placed. We will discuss context and the students will create an appropriate location for their monument.Grades 3-6 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Week of August 5th: Eco-House and Eco-Resort
Eco-House and Eco-Resort: We will discuss how to create a place that leaves as small a footprint as possible on the planet and uses resources wisely. Factors such as prevailing winds, sun exposure, water collection and wind generated energy will be discussed and incorporated into the designs. We will evaluate the use of local materials and the architectural styles of the location that is selected and the students will make determinations of what they will incorporate into their designs. The goal of the resort design will be to have a compound that is as self-sustaining as possible.Grades 6-8 1:30-4:30 p.m.
Week of August 5th: Sustainable Housing
