Plenty to do in the neighborhood this gorgeous weekend. Here are a few ideas; check our Events calendar any time for more.

Friday Contra Dance at 7:30 p.m. at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N., in the Brick Building.

Gregory Martin, author of “Stories for Boys” will be at the Greenwood Library, 8016 Greenwood Ave. N., from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday as part of “Seattle Reads.”

Martin’s quirky, heart-wrenching memoir looks at family secrets, truth and reconciliation, acceptance and forgiveness. As Martin struggles to come to terms with revelations of his father’s homosexuality following an attempted suicide, he relates humorous stories about parenting two young sons mixed with memories of his own happy childhood with the father he thought he knew.

The first phase of Woodland Park Zoo’s new Bamboo Forest Reserve opens this weekend. It will house Asian small-clawed otters, a tropical aviary, the zoo’s new twin sloth bear cubs, and kids’ nature play area.

Seattle Folklore Society presents Mélisande & Alexandre in concert at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Phinney Center’s Brick Building, 6532 Phinney Ave. N. Cost is $15 general, $13 SFS/PNA members and seniors; half-price for children. Reserve seats online or call 206-528-8523.

Join SFS for an evening of charming original and traditional songs with wonderful harmonies – in both French and English. Mélisande is a charismatic and versatile singer, guitar player, and songwriter who juggles folk, rock, jazz, and soul. Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand also plays with the well-known Québécois group Genticorum, and the couple adds traditional Québécois tunes on fiddle, flute, and mandolin.

Saturday is opening day of boating season, so be aware that bridges may be going up to let boats through, and thousands of people will be lining the banks of the Ship Canal to watch the Windermere Cup. The Montlake Bridge will be closed from 9:20 a.m. – 3 p.m. And the Mobile Food Rodeo is from 12-7 p.m. Sunday in Fremont along North 35th Street, so expect congestion down there.
