Roundup: Mobile gelateria, Greenwood food bank increases hours, reading volunteers, Chaco Canyon wins award, coyotes, online auction, sex offender notification

by | Apr 18, 2018

Here’s a roundup of various news from the neighborhood and beyond.
Nutty Squirrel Gelato, 7212 Greenwood Ave. N. (and Maple Valley and Magnolia), just received its refurbished 1970s classic three-wheeler that it found in Italy last year.

The mobile gelateria now has an awning, a 10-flavor gelato case, sink, cone holders and shelves. And at just 11 feet long and five feet wide, it’s smaller than a typical food truck, which will increase Nutty Squirrel’s catering and special events capabilities. Owners Alev and Tolga Seymen named it Carmello.
FamilyWorks is increasing the number of hours that the Greenwood Food Resource Center is open. The food bank, at The Salvation Army at 9501 Greenwood Ave. N., has seen a steady increase in customers the last two years to more than 120 households weekly. So in addition to their 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday hours, they’re now adding 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays (starting this week).
The national nonprofit Reading Partners is looking for more volunteers for its reading programs in local public schools. If you’re interested in helping make sure students read at grade level by fourth grade, you can find more information on the Reading Partners website.
Congratulations to Chaco Canyon Organic Café, including its Greenwood location, which recently won Chinook Book’s Heart of Seattle award in the dining category.

A reminder that coyotes are routinely sighted in our neighborhood, so be aware if you have small animals that go outside. Stacey tells us she recently saw a coyote walking near Palatine avenue North and North 56th Street on four separate occasions.
Whittier Elementary in Ballard, which draws from Phinney Ridge and Greenwood, has just opened its online auction, which is open to the public. All profits go to the school’s PTA, which funds a number of programs at the school. A hot-ticket item is sure to be Gringotts Bank, from the Diagon Alley Project, which was across the street from the school (the majority of the structures were donated to Camp Korey in Mount Vernon).
Seattle Police Department has issued a Level 3 Sex Offender Notification for David Jackson, who recently moved to the 11200 Block of Greenwood Avenue North and is no longer under Department of Corrections supervision. Level 3 poses the highest risk to re-offend.

Detective Stevenson from the Seattle Police Department’s Sex Offender Detail is responsible for checking on this offender and verifying his addresses as long as he is residing at them.
To learn more about these offenders and to see their photos, please visit the King County Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender website and search by their name. You will also find personal safety tips and resources on this site.
If you have further questions about these offenders, contact Michelle McRae of the Seattle Police Sex Offender Detail at (206) 684-5581 or e-mail [email protected].
