Take 5 Urban Market destroyed in gas explosion, seeking help

by | May 3, 2024

With the devastating Greenwood PSE gas explosion of 2016 never quite far from our minds, the beloved Take 5 Urban Market on the corner of 8th and NW 70th Street has sadly been devastated by a gas explosion Thursday morning. Nobody was present or injured, but the interior of the deli and store was completely destroyed. The Fire Department has already confirmed the cause was an accidental natural gas leak.

Owner Rebecca Rouleau and her husband, co-owner, and chef Bryan Vietmeier have vowed to rebuild, but that is a long and tangled road that will take time and resources. Friends and family of the Market have started a GoFundMe to help them get through this awful time, and you are invited to join the efforts here.

Note: As someone who understands the shock and heartache of this – I owned the Chaco Canyon Café across the street from the 2016 explosion – I can confirm that any and all financial and emotional support that the community can afford is appreciated more than you can imagine. Let’s come together as a community and bring Take 5 back to life!
