North Seattle Boys & Girls Club sells its Greenwood building to affordable housing organization, will return to new building on the site after redevelopment

by | Mar 12, 2018

The North Seattle Boys & Girls Club in Greenwood has sold its aging building at 8635 Fremont Ave. N. to Bellwether Housing, which plans to create affordable housing on that site, with space for the club to return.

“For the past 6 years, we have seen substantial growth in our North Seattle Boys & Girls Club membership and at the same time, our building is rapidly aging. As we look to the future, we want to ensure that our kids continue to receive high-quality programming in a facility that can meet their needs,” said Dr. Lisa Chin, President/CEO at Boys & Girls Clubs of King County.
“By partnering with an organization like Bellwether, we are looking to continue to offer youth programs on-site after the development, while also creating more affordable housing options for our kids and their families,” added Chin.

Bellwether Housing owns and operates 2,100 affordable housing units in 32 buildings, according to a press release.
The Club will continue to operate in its current location while Bellwether establishes a development plan. We’ve got a message in to the Club to find out more about where its programs would run during development.
Update 2:50 p.m.: From Boys & Girls Clubs of King County:

Our partnership agreement with Bellwether Housing allows us to stay in our current space for the next 12 to 18 months as they make plans for the development of the space. Through this partnership, we also have the opportunity to have a dedicated programming space at the new site once the Bellwether Project is approved. In the meantime, we are continuing the process of looking for a new space to run our programs. We are currently exploring many options that would maintain programs and services for our families. We will know more about our needs once we get further along in the development process, identifying the amount of space that can be allocated for future Boys & Girls Club use.
