by | Apr 20, 2016

The Northwest Green Home Tour on April 30 and May 1 features two dozen homes, including three in our neighborhood and several more in Ballard. Free tickets and addresses for all sites are on the Green Home Tour website. (Most houses are only open one of the two days, so be sure and check the website for the day.)

Grandma’s House” at 10719 1st Ave. NW by Carkeek Park is billed as the city’s first net zero energy rental home. It produces 200 percent of its annual energy needs, but cost less to build than the average new home in Seattle. The 2,000 square foot home has three bedrooms, two baths and solar panels. It cost $120 per square foot to build, compared to the city average of $200.

Another net zero energy home at 612 NW 60th St. is an Energy Star certified, 5-Star Built Green home that was built on a budget of just $124 per square foot ($114 after rebates and solar production incentives).

Phinney Ridge Discrete” at 217 N. 51st St. was a gut remodel that includes an accessory dwelling unit in the basement, a new master suite upstairs, new kitchen and sunroom, large deck and porch with a view.
