News roundup: Best neighborhoods for trick-or-treating, honors for local businesses, volunteer for Green Seattle Day, family wanted for commercial shoot

Seattle is #18 on Zillow’s annual Trick-or-Treat index of the best cities for trick-or-treating, and Phinney Ridge is the fourth best Seattle neighborhood. Laurelhurst was #1, followed by Madison Park and Queen Anne. Ravenna was #5.

The index represents cities where kids can get the most candy, in the quickest amount of time, in the safest areas. The ranking used four equally weighted data variables: Zillow’s median home value, housing density, crime rates and population age.

Phinney Ridge’s 9 Cranes Inn, at 5717 Palatine Ave. N., was just listed as one of the top 10 cutting-edge stylish inns in the country, according to

Annie’s Nannies founder Annie Davis, who lives in Phinney Ridge, just received the Association of Premier Nanny Agencies’ first Lifetime Achievement Award. Davis started her company in 1984. According to the company, Annie’s Nannies was a 2009Mayor’s Small Business Award winner and the first Seattle small business to pay a $15 minimum wage.

A Seattle-based TV and video producer is looking for a Seattle family for a one-minute branded entertainment
national TV spot for Scripps Networks (Great American Country/HGTV/Food Network). He wants a 30-something mom and dad, plus two kids who have a “warm, traditional kitchen.”

I’m looking for a Mom and her family in the Puget Sound area. She and her husband/male partner should be (or at least look) mid- to late-30s with a couple of kids, 6-10 age range. Mom juggles lots of activities, demands and responsibilities. Her kitchen should be traditional and not overly modern– not OLD but not sleek and too contemporary. It should be homey, warm, natural, lived in, authentic. The product we’re featuring is bean soup but don’t worry, you won’t have to make it.

Our shoots are a lot of fun and honestly, pretty easy. We’ll come with a food stylist and hair/makeup person so you’ll really feel like a star! And in addition to $500 for your efforts, you’ll have a cool, professionally-shot story featuring your family and kitchen (great for Facebook posts and real estate listings!).

This is for a one-day shoot taking place in the Seattle/Tacoma/Bellevue/Everett area. We can tape any day between Monday-Friday, November 9-13 although Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday (Nov 10-12) of that week is preferred. Shooting start time is flexible and we’d need Mom to be available the whole day (with plenty of downtime to check work email, etc.). Dad and the kids would need to be present, too, but not necessarily the entire time.

If interested, Mom should send a brief bio of her and her family (including ages) plus pictures of everyone and a couple of shots of the kitchen.

Sign up to volunteer for the 10th annual Green Seattle Day on Saturday, Nov. 7, at various parks throughout Seattle.

Join hundreds of volunteers planting thousands of trees and other plants in parks throughout the City that will grow up to be the next generation of our urban forest. Green Seattle Day is a celebration of the forest that makes this the Emerald City. Help us keep it that way!

This family-friendly planting day is great for all ages, and no experience is necessary. We’ll bring the plants, tools, gloves, coffee, and snacks. You’ll get a great work-out, spend some time outside in a beautiful park, and feel great knowing that you spent the morning doing something good for your community and our urban environment. Bring friends and family with you, or meet new friends as you work together in your neighborhood park.

Everyone can help – sign up to volunteer now! Advance registration really helps us to plan the best event we can for all of our volunteers.

Dress warmly for the weather – we will be out rain or shine – and wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes that can get dirty and wet. Bring a water bottle and reusable coffee mug if you have them. We will have coffee to fill up, and some snacks to keep you going!
