Aug. 28 is the deadline to apply to be part of the annual Phinney Center Winter Festival on Dec. 5-6. This two-day event features more than 115 crafts vendors, continuous live entertainment and plenty of food and baked goods. It attracts about 4,000-5,000 customers.
Mike tells us he found two Wilson tennis rackets on 1st Avenue NW. He said it looked like the remains of a theft scattered on the ground. He took them to the Phinney Center’s lost and found.
A reader tells us they chased a car prowler into a building at Greenwood Avenue and North 90th Street at 4:45 a.m. last Friday. He says the man was in his 20s, white, skinny, with a full red backpack and wearing a hat. “I noticed him walking around and when he started going up to cars i got my camera and started walking toward him. He then took off and I lost him at 9050 greenwood ave.”
Woodland Park Zoo is now accepting lottery entries for its Fall Fecal Fest, for the opportunity to purchase the zoo’s prize Zoo Doo compost.
Literacy Source, an adult literacy center that provides free classes and one-on-one tutoring to low-income adults at three sites, is registering students for its fall term (Sept. 14-Dec. 10). Tutoring is provided in: basic reading and writing, math, ESL, digital literacy skills, citizenship and GED prep. The closest site to us in Fremont.
Any low-income adult who plans to stay in the US permanently, and has pre-college-level skills is eligible for Literacy Source’s small-group ABE and ESL classes as well as one-on-one tutoring. Friends of Seattle Public Library’s fall book sale is Sept. 11-13 at Magnuson Park, 7400 Sand Point Way N.E., Building 30. The sale features more than 100,000 books, CDs, DVDs and more. The book sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13. Most items will sell for $1 to $3. All items half-price on Sunday. The sale will include a “rare and collectibles” section, as well as a “better books” section with individually-priced items. Proceeds benefit the Library.
You can donate school supplies to Mary’s Place Family Center at Aurora Avenue North and North 130th Street from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19. Just drop them off with volunteers in the parking lot. Mary’s Place students need: T-9 Graphic calculators, Paper, Pens, Pencils, notebooks, composition books, erasers, crayons, colored pencils, markers, highlighters, dry-erase markers and boards, scissors, glue sticks, tape, binders, hand sanitizer, tissue.
The City of Seattle has unveiled a new real-time emergency alert and notification system called AlertSeattle, which provides information on what to do during emergencies like earthquakes, flooding or other disasters.
AlertSeattle is a free service that allows you to sign up online to receive customized alerts via text message, email, voice message, and on social media (Facebook and Twitter).This service is provided by the City of Seattle at no cost; however, message and data rates may apply.
In addition to emergency alerts, you can also choose to receive customizable community notifications. These will include notifications about severe weather, safety, health, utility disruptions, major traffic incidents, and more.
