The Seattle Public Library has a bunch of special programs happening this summer for readers of all ages. Its “Zone In!” Summer of Learning program is designed to prevent summer setback among school-age children. The program runs through Aug. 31. Pick up an entry form at your local library and read 10 books or do special activities that include science or building something, creating artwork, learning a magic trick, etc. You’ll get a free book when signing up, a free day pass for your family to the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture once you’ve completed 10 items, and if you turn in your form by Aug. 4 you’ll be entered into a drawing for the city librarian’s Breakfast of Champions event.
Teens and tweens can create and share videos, photos, GIFs, artwork, poetry or creative writing at teenspl.tumblr.com (#bysplteens).
While supplies last, they also will get free books when they come to the library for a program, attend an outreach event, or participate in an activity. Tweens and teens also can sign up online at seattle-summer-2014.bibliocommons.com to create an avatar, set up their own summer online bookshelf and earn badges.

The 30th Annual Night Out Against Crime is coming up on Tuesday, Aug. 5. Register your block party to get a permit to close the street.
Night Out is a national Crime Prevention event. It is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, increase neighborhood support in anti-crime efforts, and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
Seattle has had a long history of supporting Night Out. The program has been growing every year, with over 1,400 neighborhoods participating in 2013. It’s fun, free and offers a great opportunity to reconnect with your neighbors, share information with one another all while learning more about crime prevention. You do not need to be in an active Block Watch to hold a Night Out event.
Within the Night Out registration form, blocks are given the opportunity to close down the street. Please remember, in order to legally close the street a permit must be completed.
