Architects Without Borders is holding a contest to design Little Free Libraries. You must register by Friday, Aug. 1, and submit your design by Aug. 27.

Little Free Libraries are small-scale book shelters that function as “take-a-book, leave-a-book” gathering places. They provide a location where the free exchange of books, ideas, stories, and interests contribute to a shared experience valued by neighbors and visitors. All entry fees benefit Architects Without Borders – Seattle, a local non-profit that provides ecologically sensitive and culturally appropriate design assistance to communities in need.

The Seattle-based nonprofit NorthWest Student Exchange is looking for host families for international high school students.

Hosting is a great way to make an international friendship, learn about another culture without leaving home, and make a difference in young person’s life. Most hosts are busy families. They include their exchange student in their everyday life and provide the student with a bed, a place to study, meals, and a safe, caring family environment. They are not expected to provide travel opportunities or an entertainment program. Students attend a local high school and are strongly encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities.

If you are interested learning more about hosting please e-mail us at [email protected] or call us at 206-527-0917.
NWSE exchange students are closely screened for appropriate motivation, academic and language skills; our students have solid emotional and practical support from NWSE professional partners abroad, and from the students’ natural parents in their own countries. Our students come with their own spending money and health and accident insurance. NWSE local Academic Coordinators recruit, screen and orient local host families and provide close support throughout the program.

Beginning next Monday, Aug. 4, Seattle residents can apply for up to four free trees for their yard and planting strips through Seattle reLeaf’s Trees for Neighborhoods program. Participants receive a watering bag for each tree, training on proper planting and care, assistance applying for street tree planting permits, and ongoing care reminders and workshop opportunities, such as pruning. This year, the program is offering 12 tree species ranging from large native conifers to small deciduous trees appropriate for planting under power lines and along the street, including Douglas fir, black tupelo, and incense cedar.

Phinney Ridge resident Annie Davis’s business, Annie’s Nannies, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a picnic for all past nannies and families on Aug. 14 at Woodland Park, Shelter 5. The company is providing a picnic lunch, goody bags, balloon animals, and Goofy Gideon the Magician. Everyone will gather for a huge group picture at 12:45 p.m.
