Viewlands Elementary students collected 992 non-perishable food items over the last few weeks to give to 25 school families in need this holiday season. More than a dozen students, parents, and volunteers from 10 community businesses and organizations gathered last Wednesday to pack up the special food boxes, thanks to help from the Hunger Intervention Program.

The Starbucks on Holman Road also gathered food at the store and sent volunteers to help at the packing party. Lenny’s Produce and QFC also donated boxes of fresh produce.

Michelle Ota, Viewlands Elementary principal, was approached by a mother who had self-identified as a family that was in need and was so relieved to receive a full box of food because she was going to be able to provide dinner for her child. “I am thankful that her student will be able to arrive at school tomorrow ready to learn. The relief on her face was all the reward I needed to know we are making a difference in our community,” stated Ota.
