Black and white photography by the late Ruby Smith at Couth Buzzard at Friday’s Artwalk

by | Jun 6, 2012

Couth Buzzard Books‘ Artwalk show this Friday is intensely personal, featuring black-and-white photography by Ruby Smith, the late daughter of Couth Buzzard Books’ co-owner Theo Dzielak. Smith died last Wednesday after a nine-month battle with Burkitt’s Lymphoma. She was just 17 when she was diagnosed.

Friday’s art show of 26 photos is titled “The Hidden Shadows of Cancer.” Ruby’s photos are also being shown at 4Culture in Pioneer Square.

Children’s Hospital helped Ruby put together a video documenting her cancer journey through photography.

Dzielak and Ruby’s mother, Kate Smith, plan to install a memorial bench in Ruby’s honor at a Seattle park. If you’d like to donate, you can send a check to Theo Dzielak, Couth Buzzard Books, 8310 Greenwood Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98103.

And local musicians from the Pacific Northwest Folklore Society are putting together a Couth Buzzard Appreciation Day concert on Saturday, June 23. More information on that coming soon.
