Gainsbourg Lounge at 8550 Greenwood Ave. N. is hosting a themed party and book-signing by Seattle cartoonist David Lasky on Sunday, Oct. 9. The party is to honor Lasky’s inclusion in the 2011 Best American Comics publication.
Lasky’s mini-comic, “Soixante-Neuf,” was inspired by the relationship between singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg and singer-actress Jane Birkin.
With text composed by former Seattle author and noted music critic Mairead Case, the comic depicts Serge and Jane wandering Paris, looking for each other on the métro, during a film and in a riot. It features collaged lyrics, riffs on movie posters, and a surprise in the middle.
Soixante-Neuf was originally commissioned by Light in the Attic Records as an insert to their 2010 release of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin’s J’Taime…Moi Non Plus. Also included in the 2011 Best American Comics is Mr. Lasky’s The Ultimate Graphic Novel (in Six Panels).
Lasky was the 2009 Cartoonist Northwest “Cartoonist of the Year” and nominated for a 2007 Stranger Genius Award. Check out one of his Serge drawings here.
The party starts at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, and includes Lasky discussing the creation of “Soixante-Neuf,” the music of Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, wall-sized video projections of “Soixante-Neuf,” and Serge & Jane-inspired absinthe drink specials.
