If you’d like to plant a tree in your parking strip, the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods’ Neighborhood Matching Fund (NMF) is accepting applications until Aug. 21 for this year’s Tree Fund. Just organize a group of your neighbors to plant street trees – the city provides the trees for free; all you have to do is plant them and take care of them. (Note: We did this several years ago and it was a great neighborhood bonding experience, and made our street look nicer and a little shadier.)
Wait, there’s more! To increase local food security and expand the tree canopy on private properties, we are testing a pilot expansion this year. All NMF Tree Fund participants who plant street trees with their neighbors have the bonus option of selecting one free cherry or apple tree to plant on their private properties. You can help bring more trees to your neighborhood streets and private yards!
