Grammy winners to perform at Empty Sea Studios

by | Jul 7, 2009

The new Empty Sea Studios at 6300 Phinney Ave. N. is only a couple months old, but it’s gaining a reputation among acoustic music fans and musicians.
Owner Michael Connolly said he’s thrilled that two Grammy-winning musicians – Mike Compton and David Grier – contacted him to ask if they could play at Empty Sea on July 27th. Tickets are $25.

These guys are super famous – they’re both Grammy winners, and Mike was featured on many John Hartford records as well as the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. David Grier has been voted Best Guitarist of The Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association multiple years in a row. The amazing thing is: they contacted me because word has spread to Nashville about the space for music we’re creating right here in Phinney.

Empty Sea Studios remodeled a Craftsman house that had been a bookstore into an intimate acoustic music space.
This Friday’s concert at 8 p.m. is by Goh Kurosawa, an LA-based guitarist originally from Japan. Goh plays a mix of jazz, flamenco, folk, and other highly rhythmic instrumental guitar music. Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. He’ll also be teaching a workshop this Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for all levels of guitar students. Cost for the workshop is $10 and space is limited to 15 students.
On Thursday, July 23rd, singer-songwriters Jonathan Byrd and Chris Kokesh perform at 7:30 p.m. They are in the middle of a national tour. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
