by | Jun 24, 2009

Carkeek Park is turning 80 years old and is celebrating with a “Heaven and Earth” party from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday at the Carkeek Park Environmental Learning Center, 950 NW Carkeek Park Road.

Meet Deputy Mayor Tim Ceis, Councilmember Sally Clark, and Deputy Parks and Recreation Superintendent Christopher Williams at this gala celebration. You’ll discover the stories captured in the waters, trees, and soil as told by local historians and park naturalists about this premier urban getaway that Sunset Magazine recently named #3 among the top 10 urban parks in the U.S.

Come celebrate the anniversary, enjoy family-friendly activities, and help kick off the opening of a new outdoor art exhibit, “Heaven and Earth,” sponsored by the Center on Contemporary Art, the Carkeek Park Advisory Council, the City Department of Neighborhoods, and Seattle Parks and Recreation.

At 1 p.m. there’s a welcoming flag ceremony by Troop #123, Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America, followed by a cake cutting hosted by the Carkeek Watershed Community Action Project, and the Holman Road QFC.
At 1:30 p.m. there’s family-friendly activities, history walks, and stories of Carkeek past, and Backyard Habitat and Demonstration Garden dedication.
At 3 p.m. there’s a reception and Art Walk, where you can meet the artists of “Heaven and Earth.”
