Gainsbourg to ‘surrender’ on Cinco de Mayo

by | Apr 28, 2009

One of Greenwood’s newer drinking establishments, Gainsbourg, at 8550 Greenwood Ave. N., is having their own special twist on a traditional Cinco de Mayo next Tuesday. We’ll let owner Hannah Levin explain it all, because her prose is so much better than ours:

Never mind the frat boys headed for Senor Frogs, here’s the real story: Cinco de Mayo is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army’s unanticipated defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The battle was significant because even though they were outnumbered two-to-one, the Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army that had known no defeat for nearly 50 years. How bad-ass is that? In recognition of this, French cocktail lounge and bistro Gainsbourg is offering our humble surrender to our conquerors next Tuesday, May 5.
For that night only, we will serve Pacifico, Modelo Especial and Corona ($3) along with pint-sized hand-shaken margaritas with house-made mix ($5) and a special, delicious-if-somewhat-ridiculous food menu that will include fish tacos with mango slaw and lime-cilantro creme fraiche, “Mexi-Frites” with fire roasted pepper ketchup, and cucina style chips with salsa fresca and guacamole.
We’ve also hired a rather awesome Mexican folk music trio (NOT a cheeseball mariachi band, I assure you) called Trio Lucero Del Norte who will be kicking out their jams from 9 – 10 p.m. that evening. You can check them out over here: https://www.myspace.com/triolucerodelnorte
Fortuitously, this unorthodox celebration will coincide with the opening of our 156-square foot, outdoor cafe and everyone can agree that drinking outside makes everything seem right with the universe (if only temporarily).
