Banning motorboats on Green Lake on park agenda

by | Oct 18, 2008

The Seattle Board of Park Commissioners meet Thursday, Oct. 23 and among the items on the agenda is a proposal to ban motorboats on Green Lake.

Water skiing events have been held on Green Lake since at least 1950, when the National Water Ski Championships were held there. These days, the Lake Sammamish Ski Club holds events at Green Lake on Memorial Day and Labor Day. Park guidelines revised in 1987 limit water skiing tournaments to two days per year between noon and 6 p.m. outside of June, July and August.

Park staff are recommending the motor boats go away, given concerns the lake is too small, the boat wakes are damaging the shoreline and nesting birds are being negatively affected. More details about the meeting are here.

Has anyone ever seen these water skiing events? What are they like?
