Greenwood-Phinney Chamber of Commerce suspends operations, task force figuring out what comes next

by | Mar 8, 2012

The Greenwood-Phinney Chamber of Commerce has suspended operations (except for the Greenwood Seafair Parade in July) as it works to reinvent itself. A new task force is meeting weekly to figure out the future of the Chamber. The task force is looking at three main options:

  • Resume chamber operations with modifications to the existing organization.
  • Dissolve the chamber and create a new independent business organization.
  • Dissolve the chamber and create a new business organization in collaboration with the Phinney Neighborhood Association.

We’re looking at key functions of the Chamber – including marketing, advocacy, business education, networking, community events – and determining priorities for the future. We’re also analyzing Chamber finances to make sure that it can remain strong and self-supporting. Rest assured, regardless of the outcome, the neighborhood business association (or chamber) will take into account the time lapse of benefits and extend all current paid memberships in a fair and reasonable manner.
Last month, the business community elected new board members and officers, including Mike Veitenhans as Chamber president, to overhaul the Chamber. Over the next 2 months, Mike and the board will join with other neighborhood business leaders to form a task force to define the best approach. Meetings are set at the PNA every Monday, 5-6 p.m. Interest in participation in the task force has been strong, and we invite others join us. We simply ask that you be on time and commit to attending at least two-thirds of the meetings. Let Mike know if you’re interested at [email protected].

To contact the Greenwood-Phinney Chamber of Commerce, call 206-783-0441 (a new number that will be answered by PNA staff, who will forward messages as needed); email [email protected]; or mail to PO Box 30715, Seattle WA 98103.
