The crew at Calico Salon – Cassie, Greta, Quincy and Luanne – are at it again, and are asking the Phinneywood community to join them in supporting Southeast Seattle’s Washington Building Leaders of Change (WA-BLOC).

WA-BLOC is a Southeast Seattle non-profit that works with black and brown scholars to promote racial equality and justice. They offer Freedom Schools which is a 6 week high-impact, literacy program delivered to K-12 scholars during the summer. Their leaders use culturally responsive teaching practices and culturally relevant reading material and curriculum.
WA-BLOC collaborates regularly with local communities to facilitate social justice events and partner up with restaurants and chefs to provide free to-go meals for students and families in Rainer Beach.

To donate to WA-BLOC, Venmo any amount to @calicosalonfundraisers. All donations $5 and over will be entered into a raffle for a generous gift basket that includes a book, wine and candles from Black owned businesses, gift card to City Sweats and R+Co hair products.

Calico is very passionate about community involvement, connecting with neighbors, and making sure they are a positive force in their neighborhood. In their previous salon together as employees, they organized warm coat drives and other efforts that have helped beneficiaries from homeless youth to goats. “Everyone at the Salon is a social activist,” says owner Cassie Tarver.
