Taproot Theatre opens Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s beloved musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat tonight, announcing a two-week extension. Due to generous community support and HVAC renovations near completion, the theatre can confidently move forward with its summer programming.
When Taproot experienced a devastating copper wire theft and vandalism, both Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and summer camps were threatened. Now, after the success of the theatre’s Together with Taproot fundraising campaign, Taproot’s HVAC system is functional and summer programming has surpassed expectations.
“We went from thinking that our summer programming might be postponed or canceled entirely to being able to announce a two-week extension for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat—before it even opens!” Producing Artistic Director Karen Lund said. “Because of our incredible community, we actually get to do more of the things we love, including welcoming over 400 students in for our summer Acting Studio camps.”
Now running through August 29, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat returns to Taproot for the first time in nearly 20 years—this time with a unique summer camp theme. Associate Artistic Director Bretteney Beverly directs this year’s production with beloved Seattle artists playing camp counselors telling the story of Joseph.
“Our production of Joseph is both a celebration of our legacy and a gift to the community that has sustained and inspired us for five decades,” Beverly said. “One of the most meaningful elements of our production is the coat itself, which will incorporate the hopes and dreams of our community.”
On May 23, Taproot launched its Community Wishes Project, which invited community members to submit their hopes, inspirations, and wishes to the theatre. Select responses will be incorporated into the design of the Technicolor dreamcoat featured in Taproot’s production. “With this, the coat becomes more than a costume; it becomes a living symbol of the people, stories, and generations that continue to shape Taproot Theatre,” Beverly said.
