Walk into almost any gym and you’ll find two distinct worlds: a floor full of barbells, dumbbells, and kettlebells on one side, and a row of shiny machines on the other. Most people gravitate toward one or the other – either because that’s what they know, or because one feels less intimidating than the other. Before we talk about the pros and cons of each, we want to emphasize that any strength training that you will do is valuable and better than doing nothing!
Here’s the truth: both can have a place in a well designed strength training program, but their uses and benefits are different – so this article should help you decide which is best for you!
The Case for Free Weights:
Free weights — barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, and the like — ask more of your body. That’s exactly why they’re so effective and why we almost exclusively use them for strength training at SSP.
They challenge your stability and nervous system.
When you pick up a dumbbell and press it overhead, your shoulder, elbow, and wrist all have to work together to control the load. Your core has to engage to keep your spine stable. Your feet have to root into the floor. Every joint in the chain is participating — not just the muscles you’re trying to train, but the entire system that supports them. This is what makes free weight training so powerful. It doesn’t just build muscle — it builds the neuromuscular coordination and joint stability that translates to real life movement.
They more closely replicate how we actually move.
Think about the physical demands of everyday life. Carrying groceries. Picking up a child. Hiking a steep trail. Lifting a heavy box overhead. None of these involve a machine guiding the load through a fixed path. They all require your body to produce force while simultaneously stabilizing your joints against an unpredictable load. Free weight training prepares you for that. When you deadlift, you’re not just strengthening your hamstrings and glutes — you’re training your entire posterior chain to work together, your core to brace under load, and your body to manage force production and stability at the same time. That’s a skill that carries over into real life.
They build functional strength that lasts.
The strength you build with free weights isn’t just stronger muscles — it’s a more capable, more resilient body. Joints that are trained to stabilize under load tend to be more durable over time. Our bodies are a vastly complex symphony of tissues that work together to create movement, and training with free weights makes sure you’re using all of those systems together. Movement patterns trained with free weights tend to carry over to real-life tasks more directly than machine-based work does.
The Case for Machines:
Machines get a bad reputation in some fitness circles, but that reputation isn’t entirely fair. There are specific situations where machine based strength training can be very useful.
They provide significant external stability.
This is the defining characteristic of machine-based training. When you sit down at a leg press or a chest press machine, the equipment controls the path of movement for you and the padding and equipment around you restrict your body to one position. Your body doesn’t have to work to stabilize the load — the machine does that job. This may mean you’re able to produce more force (i.e. you can leg press more than you can squat with a DB or KB) and isolate specific muscle groups easier than with free weights.
They’re valuable in injury rehabilitation.
When you’re recovering from an injury, your body’s stabilizing muscles are often compromised. Asking them to do too much too soon can slow recovery or cause further damage. Machines allow you to load a specific muscle group and keep it moving without placing unnecessary demand on the surrounding structures. A person rehabbing a knee injury, for example, might use a leg extension machine to maintain quad strength while protecting the joint from the demands of a free weight squat.
They’re effective for targeting specific muscle groups.
Because machines control the movement path and remove stabilization from the equation, they allow you to isolate muscles with a precision that’s hard to replicate with free weights. This is why you’ll see machines used heavily in bodybuilding — cable flyes for the chest, leg curls for the hamstrings, lat pulldowns for the back. If your goal is hypertrophy in a specific area, machines can be a useful tool.
They’re accessible for people with movement limitations.
Not everyone has the mobility, coordination, or body awareness to perform complex free weight movements safely from day one. For someone just starting out, dealing with chronic pain, or navigating significant movement limitations, machines can be a lower-barrier entry point that allows them to build strength and confidence before progressing to more demanding patterns.
So Which Should You Use?
The honest answer is: free weights if you can, but machines are also a great choice!
If you’re early in your training journey, coming back from an injury, or working around movement limitations — machines are a legitimate and valuable tool. There’s no shame in starting there. A smart program meets you where you are. But if you’re looking to build strength that shows up in your daily life, improve your coordination and stability, and develop the kind of physical capacity that holds up over time — free weights should be the foundation of your training.
