A beloved cornerstone of the PhinneyWood arts community is facing an unexpected and urgent challenge—and they’re asking for the neighborhood’s help.
Taproot Theatre Company recently experienced a devastating act of vandalism: two of their three air-conditioning units were torn apart and stripped for copper, leaving critical infrastructure damaged and the theatre in a vulnerable position heading into the warmer months.
While the theft itself may seem small, the impact is anything but. The damage goes far beyond what can be quickly repaired or replaced, affecting the theatre’s ability to operate reliably and safely. In the immediate aftermath, performances—including showings of Ain’t Misbehavin’—have already been disrupted, offering a stark reminder of just how interconnected Taproot is with the surrounding neighborhood.
When shows go dark, it’s not just the stage that’s impacted. Nearby restaurants, bars, and small businesses feel it too. A full house at Taproot often means a full evening for Greenwood’s local economy—and when performances are canceled, that ripple effect is felt up and down the corridor.
To recover from this setback and build toward a more resilient future, Taproot has launched its “Together With Taproot” campaign. Their goal is to raise $400,000 by June 1 through a combination of grants and individual contributions. These funds will support a comprehensive overhaul of the Jewell Theatre’s HVAC system and help stabilize operations during this critical time.
There’s a real sense of urgency behind this effort. With summer approaching and systems compromised, timely support will make all the difference in ensuring that Taproot can continue to open its doors, welcome audiences, and serve as a cultural anchor in the neighborhood.
Community members who are able to help are encouraged to consider making a donation, sharing the campaign with their networks, or connecting Taproot with potential funding partners. Every action—big or small—moves the needle. Taproot has long been a place where stories are shared, connections are built, and the community comes together. Now, they’re asking the community to show up for them.
