Fundraiser set up for hero of Greenwood bus crash

A Seattle man is being called a hero after stepping in to stop an out-of-control Metro bus—but his story started with something much more ordinary: he was simply on his way to a senior center.

Last week in Greenwood, 64-year-old Ernie Makinson was riding bus 5 north on Greenwood Avenue to grab lunch at the Greenwood Senior Center when the driver suffered a medical emergency. With the bus swerving and crashing into multiple vehicles, Makinson pushed his way to the front and managed to stop it, likely preventing far more serious injuries.

While his quick thinking protected fellow riders—including people headed to nearby community spaces like a senior center—Makinson was injured in the process. In the chaos, someone hopped onto the bus and stole his personal belongings, including money he had saved for rent.

Now, the community has a chance to show up for someone who showed up for others.

Donations are being collected to help Makinson recover and get back on his feet. It’s a reminder that everyday routines—like a trip to the senior center—can quickly turn into moments where neighbors look out for one another, and where community support can make all the difference.

If you’re able, consider contributing and helping a local hero during his recovery.
