A beloved Northwest tradition returns this December as Dance Fremont presents its 29th annual production of The Steadfast Tin Soldier, A Story Ballet. This family-friendly holiday performance brings to life the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale through original choreography, live music, and the joyful energy of young local dancers.
Whether it’s a yearly tradition or your first time attending, this charming 75-minute production is a perfect way to experience the magic of the season—and a wonderful introduction to the theater for young audiences.
Who Is Dance Fremont?
Dance Fremont is a nonprofit dance school located on 85th & Greenwood that has been part of the neighborhood’s cultural fabric for nearly three decades. More than just a studio, Dance Fremont is a community—a place where dancers form lifelong friendships, grow in confidence, and experience the joy of creative expression together. Their mission is rooted in inclusiveness and accessibility, supported through scholarships, community partnerships, and a warm, welcoming environment where dancers of all backgrounds and abilities can thrive.
About the Performance
This year’s Steadfast Tin Soldier continues the tradition of centering local talent—featuring 50 young dancers, an ensemble of live musicians, and a dedicated team of local costume and scenic artists.
The production includes:
- Original choreography by Vivian Little, director emerita of Dance Fremont
- Original music, lyrics, and libretto by Kathleen Mills, who also conducts the live ensemble
- Colorful, hand-tailored costumes and beautifully painted sets
- Signing Exact English (S.E.E.) incorporated into the choreography for accessibility
- A runtime of 1 hour and 15 minutes, perfect for audiences of all ages
This tender, imaginative retelling of the classic fairy tale is a celebration of movement, storytelling, and the joy that comes from creating art together.
