Beloved PhinneyWood eatery Mr. Gyros is excited to announce its grand re-opening in our vibrant neighborhood after a long hiatus of nine years. The restaurant, which had been a staple in the area for more than a decade, was destroyed in 2016 after the devastating Puget Sound Energy (PSE) gas explosion that destroyed several buildings including Mr. Gyros and Neptune Coffee.
The explosion, which injured nine people and caused significant property damage, left many in the community reeling. For Mr. Gyros, the event marked the end of an era. However, after years of rebuilding, perseverance, and unwavering support from loyal customers, the iconic restaurant is returning to its roots and welcoming back the community that has long supported it.
The grand re-opening event will take place at 8535 Phinney Avenue North on Sunday, March 16 from 3-5pm – exactly 9 years and one week after the explosion – with free food for all who attend. Mr. Gyros is inviting all of its longtime customers to join in the celebration and experience the renewed warmth and flavor of the restaurant.
“Nine years ago, we never could have imagined this moment would come,” said Sammy Arsheed, co-owner of Mr. Gyros. “The Greenwood community, our friends, and our customers have been incredibly patient and supportive through this journey. We’re thrilled to once again serve the delicious, authentic Greek food that people have missed so much.”
The re-opening of Mr. Gyros marks a new chapter not just for the restaurant, but for the entire neighborhood, which has worked hard to recover and rebuild after the explosion. The new location, located just 2 blocks from the original, will feature the same classic menu that made it a favorite among locals, including its famous kabob, shawarma, and – of course – gyros.
Mr. Gyros had been a cornerstone of the Greenwood neighborhood for over 14 years, known for its friendly atmosphere and high-quality Greek cuisine. When the gas explosion occurred in 2016, it left the restaurant and several neighboring buildings in ruins. Despite the challenges, Mr. Gyros was determined to return. The restaurant’s re-opening is a testament to the enduring spirit of Greenwood and the restaurant’s dedication to its community.
“We’re not just reopening a restaurant; we’re reuniting with the neighborhood that helped make Mr. Gyros what it is today,” said Arsheed “This re-opening represents the resilience and determination of this community. We can’t wait to see all of our Greenwood friends and families for decades to come.”
