PhinneyWood Art Walk : The BIG One returns this Friday and Saturday

by | Sep 8, 2021

Celebrate art in the neighborhood! Almost 16 months late, the 25th BIG One, PhinneyWood’s annual art walk will finally take place on Friday, Sept. 10, from 5-9 pm and Saturday, Sept. 11, from noon to 5 pm.

Originally planned for May 2020, what would have been the 25th annual art walk was postponed in compliance with Gov. Jay Inslee’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order. Recently, a few venues have started hosting monthly art walks and in June, based on a survey of past art walk venues, the PhinneyWood Arts Council decided to host The BIG One in September.

In the past, The BIG One has featured a wide variety of art in 70-80 businesses in the Phinney-Greenwood neighborhood. Over the years, this hugely popular event has turned into a neighborhood party, particularly on Friday night.

This year’s event may look a little different, however, as some businesses are not yet comfortable hosting the event so the number of venues will undoubtedly be lower and all art walk venues are being urged to plan their participation in a way that is comfortable for them. In addition, the event begins at 5 pm Friday, rather than 6, in hopes of spreading out art walkers a bit.

In the spirit of the art walk theme of “Art Up, Chow Down,” restaurants and pubs are encouraged to participate as well by offering menu specials.

Art Walk maps and information on participating venues will be available online at ArtUpPhinneyWood.com, on the Phinney Center’s website, and at participating businesses the week of the event.

The art walk is organized by the PhinneyWood Arts Council, an all-volunteer organization, in collaboration with the Phinney Neighborhood Association.

Special thanks to Robynne Raye, co-founder of Modern Dog Design, who has designed all 26 of the annual art walk posters, including one for 2020 that did not get printed. Robynne is an award-winning graphic design artist and counts posters, packaging, and identity projects as some of her favorite work. Visit her at robynneraye.com.
