Why do we celebrate our dear mothers every second Sunday in May? A Philadelphia woman named Anna Jarvis, whose mother had organized women’s groups to promote friendship and health, originated Mother’s Day. On May 12, 1907, she held a memorial service at her late mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia. Within five years virtually every state was observing the day, and in 1914 Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday.
As always, we have many local options in our neighborhood to help you recognize and honor the brave and resolute who bore and raised you! First and foremost, there is Terra Bella Flowers and Mercantile who not only supports local and organic flower farming, but also will make you an arrangement that will convey to mom just how special she is. Sip & Ship also has some gift options to delightful your dearest – from hand-selected cards, indulgent treats, wines and gifts she’ll love. The real kicker is Sip & Sip has gift wrapping services and you can send it off if your mom is far away – all in one stop. Phinney Books is also your go-to for a thoughtful gift – packed with thousands of cookbooks, novels, and interesting reads, they also provide a free wrapping service.
Mother’s day is also a great time to support our highly-impacted restaurants and bars. Got a hockey mom? Bring her a Poutine Flight and a Nanaimo Bar from the Angry Beaver. A Pomelo or Essay No. 1 from the Teacher’s Lounge will bring a smile and some effervescence to an evening with mom. Also do not forget that Phinney staple Oliver’s Twist not only is shipping out their legendary cocktails, but owner Karuna Long is exploring his roots with a stellar Cambodian menu. With dozens of restaurants, bars and cafes throughout Phinneywood, you can’t go wrong. This Sunday is about spending time with mom, not cooking – get some food to go!
Here are some other Mother’s Day specials and highlights that have been submitted to Phinneywood:
