Holiday Business Spotlight: Emerald City Hair Studio

by | Dec 27, 2019

Dear PhinneyWood readers, as 2019 winds down and turns to 2020, we are taking the time to highlight some of our incredible neighborhood businesses that make PhinneyWood what it is. We will return to regular news and events Monday, January 6.

Hidden in the base of an apartment complex across from the Greenwood Library is a sometimes unnoticed part of our thriving business district.  That doesn’t stand in the way of Julia Corneloup and Kristina O’Reilly of the newly-opened Emerald City Hair.  Moving into the old S|SPA Aveda Salon in May of 2018, they have been popular since they made the leap into entrepreneurial ownership.

Julia was born and raised in Anchorage and has wanted to own her own salon since she was 12.  “I cut my cat’s whiskers, my sister’s hair, butchered my Barbies – pretty much anyone who would let me touch their hair was fair game.”  Her grandmother always told Julia she would be a hairdresser, but she instead followed the path that other family set out for her, earned a marketing degree and went into corporate banking.  “I hated every minute of it,” she recalled, “life is too short and I needed to pursue my dream.”  Julia packed up and headed to hair school in Seattle.

It here there that she met her future business partner, Kristina O’Reilly.  Coincidently, Kristina was also in the midst of fleeing her corporate banking job in New York City.  She was a recent graduate of hair school and decided on a whim to move to Seattle while she was visiting cousins on gorgeous, sunny November day.

Both relish being entrepreneurs and love being in control of their success: “if you don’t do it, nobody will”.  They are an Aveda salon that can do pretty much anything having to do with hair outside of perms and relaxers – “from an auburn bob to a blue mohawk to a mermaid rainbow”, quipped Kristina.
