3-alarm fire guts section of Central Ballard business district

by | Oct 7, 2019

A large afternoon fire in the Ballard retail district in the 2300 block of Northwest Market Street destroyed several businesses Monday, as firefighters fought for more than three hours to get the blaze under control. The fire was first reported at 12:02 p.m., when an employee of Supercuts smelled smoke.

The roof collapsed at 1:36pm, fortunately after Seattle Fire had pulled all personnel in anticipation. Fire officials reported the blaze was under control by 3:30. At the height of the blaze, 150 firefighters, or about 65% of Seattle Fire’s on-duty personnel, were responding.

La Isla and Pho Big Bowl restaurants, Supercuts, Kitchen N Things and Octo Designs & Jewelers are the businesses located in the buildings that burned. As a grim reminder of the Greenwood gas explosion of 2017, all five businesses are expected to be a total loss.

One firefighter was taken to Harborview Medical Center with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
