Lots going on at the Seattle Public Library, as usual. Here are some highlights:
- SPL is hosting a series of Tinkerlab workshops in November. The weekly, all-ages program introduces science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts. Tinkerlab is appropriate for all ages and there is no registration required for this drop-in program.
Each week, there will be self-directed STEM challenges with building and inventor kits to play with and topical books and resources on display. Some nights will have themes like 3D printing, programming robots, moviemaking on iPads and more.
The nearest Tinkerlab location to our neighborhood is the Broadview Library, 12755 Greenwood Ave. N., from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 7, 14, 21 and 28.
- SPL is upgrading to a new print and copy system. Public printers and copiers at all library branches will be replaced. The new system will allow payment by credit card at print release kiosks and make change for cash payments (you’ll no longer pay online), offer a variety of paper sizes, provide color printing, and provide higher speed printing and copying. Work will begin Nov. 6 and should be done by Nov. 27. Printing and copying prices remain the same: ranging from 15 cents for a single-sided black and white page of 8.5×11 or 8.5×14 up to $1 for a single-sided color page at 11×17.
- Friends of The Seattle Public Library is hosting a one-day Better Book Sale featuring like-new “better” books, DVDs and some CDs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 at North Seattle College – Former Cafeteria & Baxter Student Center, First Floor, College Center Building, on College Way between 95th and 97th streets. Prices start at $3. Featured book categories include children’s books, valuable old and rare books and a selection of general non-fiction, including art books and literature. DVDs will be in very good condition.
- SPL has added the film streaming service Kanopy, which focuses on classic and independent films. SPL cardholders can now watch more than 30,000 films.
Kanopy’s collection includes indie hits like “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,” cult classics like “Donnie Darko” and “The Boondock Saints,” award-winning documentaries like the 2017 Oscar-nominated “I Am Not Your Negro,” and selections from the Criterion Collection. The service launches over 30 films a day, so there’s always something new to enjoy.
Viewers can watch five free films a month by visiting www.spl.org/kanopy. Once checked out, a title will be available for three days. The service is free, just use your email address and Library card number to create a Kanopy account.
