News roundup: Library news, art, crime

Thomas tells us someone broke into his Honda CRV around 10:15 p.m. April 5 in the parking lot of the Greenwood Safeway at North 87th Street and Greenwood Avenue North. They stole a large, black daypack with gym clothes, shoes, sunglasses, hats, contact lenses and a few other things. If you’ve seen it or his stuff, please email him at [email protected].

Greenwood artist Alexander Williamson has created an interactive community art project called “The Fungus Among Us.” He created a professional-grade adult coloring book with scientifically accurate illustrations, which you can use to accurately identify local fungi. He says the book is open source, which means you can reprint it as many times as you want for personal use.

Seattle Public Library has a variety of free activities for kids during Seattle Public Schools’ spring break next week. You can check the full schedule here. In our neighborhood, the Broadview Library, 12755 Greenwood Ave. N., is showing “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (PG-13) from 12-2:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 14.

Seattle City Librarian Marcellus Turner is asking for public input on reimagining library spaces. He’s holding a “community conversation” from 6- 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium. SPL had nearly 13 million visits and circulated more than 11 million items last year. “Particularly in a rapidly changing world, it’s important we engage with our patrons on how we should be planning for the future, including looking at innovative ways to improve Library spaces,” Turner said in a press release.

The Greenwood Library, 8016 Greenwood Ave. N., is hosting an open house for business owners and entrepreneurs to meet with community lenders and providers of free business consulting from 3-5 p.m. Thursday, April 21. “This event will gather together local experts who provide technical and financial assistance to new and growing businesses. Attendees will receive free advice on next steps, business ideas and financial assistance.”

The Greenwood Library also is hosting another free electronic and appliance “repair café” from 1-4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 24. Instructors from the Phinney Neighborhood Association Tool Lending Library will teach people of all ages how to fix appliances, computers and other electrical devices.

Children, teens and adults are invited to learn how common electronic items work and save money while exploring the lost art of DIY fixing. Attendees should bring their broken appliances, computers, tools, gadgets and other electrical devices to Repair Café and learn how to fix them.

Sound Transit is asking for public input on its ST3 Draft Plan, which will lead to a November ballot measure on where the next mass transit expansion should go. You can take the online survey through April 29. There’s also an open house from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on April 19 at Ballard High School. You can also email comments to [email protected].

Last year, our region added 52,000 people and an estimated 41,000 cars. In the next 25 years our population is estimated to grow by one million people, increasing demand for transit. The ST3 Draft Plan responds to rising gridlock by extending congestion-free light rail, Bus Rapid Transit and Sounder train service. This includes bringing light rail to Everett, West Seattle, Ballard, Redmond, Issaquah and Tacoma; Bus Rapid Transit along Interstate 405; and expanded Sounder service on the south line, including new service to DuPont.
