Metro bus changes coming this weekend to neighborhood routes 5, 28 and 48

Metro’s spring service revisions begin Saturday on dozens of routes, including the 5, 28 and 48 in our neighborhood. Route 48 is changing to help buses work better with Sound Transit’s new Link light rail service to Capitol Hill and the University of Washington. That route will be broken into two separate routes, with buses coming more often on both.

The north part of Route 48, between the University District and Loyal Heights, will become new Route 45….The south part of Route 48, between the University District and the Mount Baker Transit Center, will remain as is, except that it will serve two new bus stops in each direction on NE Pacific St just west of Montlake Blvd NE (near the University of Washington Link station). Riders can transfer to and from Route 45 at the bus stops on NE Pacific St between Montlake Blvd NE and 15th Ave NE. Buses will come more often on weekdays and weekends.

Watch a video about how to transfer between Route 48 and Link light rail at University of Washington Station.

Route 45 (NEW)
The north part of Route 48, between the University District and Loyal Heights, will become new Route 45. On weekdays and Sunday, Route 45 will run northbound on University Way NE, NE Ravenna Blvd and 12th Ave NE between NE Pacific St and NE 65th St. Routing to and from NE 65th St and Loyal Heights will remain the same as current Route 48. Southbound, Route 45 will run between NE 65th St and NE Pacific St on Roosevelt Way NE, NE Ravenna Blvd and University Way NE. It will not serve 15th Ave NE in either direction on weekdays or Sunday. On Saturday only, because of the closure of University Way NE between NE 50th and NE 52nd streets for the University District Farmers Market, northbound Route 45 will use 15th Ave NE in both directions between NE 50th St and NE Ravenna Blvd, with stops at NE 52nd St and NE Ravenna Blvd. On weekdays, buses for routes 45, 71, 73 and 373 will come every 7-8 minutes to and from University Way NE and the new University of Washington Link station. When the University of Washington is not in session, fewer trips will be canceled than with current Route 48.

Route 28 will be combined with Route 28X.

The combined route, Route 28X, will follow a revised express pathway to downtown Seattle via N 39th Street and Aurora Avenue N.

It will operate all day on weekdays and weekends.

It will continue to provide service between Broadview and downtown Seattle via Carkeek Park during peak periods only.

Riders who currently board on NW Market Street will board on 8th Avenue NW.

Between Fremont and downtown Seattle, use new Route 62 (formerly Route 16) via Dexter Avenue N or Route 40 via Westlake Avenue.

To get to and from downtown Seattle, use routes 28X, 40 or 62. Route 28X will serve N 39th St, Leary Way NW and 8th Ave NW and will not serve the eastbound stop on NW Market St at 8th Ave NW. New southbound stops to downtown Seattle will be added at NW Leary Way & NW 43rd St, on N 39th St at Greenwood Ave N and Dayton Ave N, on the Aurora Ave N on-ramp at N 38th St and on Aurora Ave N at Galer St. New northbound stops to Carkeek Park and/or Broadview will be added at Aurora Ave N & Galer St, Aurora Ave N off-ramp at N 38th St, N 39th St & Evanston Ave N, N 39th St & Phinney Ave N, Leary Way NW & 6th Ave NW, 8th Ave NW & NW 45th St and 8th Ave NW & NW 50th St.

Route 5 Express is adding one northbound trip to Greenwood that will leave 4th Avenue South and South Jackson Street at 4 p.m.
