Neighborhood news: Kickstarter for new business, televised levy forum, property valuations increase

Here’s a roundup of various neighborhood news.

Preserve and Gather, a new café coming soon to the corner of NW 85th Street and 6th Avenue NW, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help finish renovating the space. Funders can earn pastries, coffee, punch cards, branded mugs, T-shirts and totes, and private parties.

Seattle Department of Transportation is asking for help locating sidewalk newsstands in need of maintenance. If you see one with a broken window or some other maintenance issue, you can report it to SeattleNewsstands.org.

Seattle Parks and Recreation and Seattle Public Utilities are updating the outfall vault, which lets water leave Green Lake and enter the storm water system on the lake’s north side near Meridian Avenue North. Work began today and will be complete by Oct. 30. There will be intermittent trail diversions to allow equipment access, so please be aware when you’re in that area.

Metropolis, 7319 Greenwood Ave. N., will have extended weekday hours beginning Oct. 1. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Metropolis also is now a UPS Access Point, meaning you can drop off pre-paid UPS packages and redirect your packages to the store for pickup.

City Fruit, which picks leftover fruit from fruit trees in several neighborhoods, including ours, to distribute to food banks and meal programs, has announced that the 2015 harvest was the largest in City Fruit’s history, even with several weeks of viable picking time left. City Fruit has already harvested 28,629 pounds of fruit, surpassing the organization’s 2014 record of 27,948.

Seattle Speaks is hosting a live, interactive, televised forum on the Move Seattle transportation levy at 7 p.m. Tuesday on the Seattle Channel. Move Seattle is asking voters for $930 million in property taxes, to replace the existing Bridging the Gap transportation levy that expires at the end of this year. The forum takes place at Town Hall downtown, and is hosted by Seattle Channel host Brian Callanan (admission is free but advance registration is required). The program will be broadcast live on Seattle Channel cable 21 (HD on Comcast 321 and Wave 721) and online at seattlechannel.org.

Joining the panel discussion in support of the levy proposal are Andrew Glass Hastings, transportation advisor to Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, and Maud Daudon, president and CEO of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. Speaking against the measure are Eugene Wasserman of the Keep Seattle Affordable opposition campaign and Fremont business owner Suzie Burke.

The King County Assessor’s Office has announced that Phinney Ridge/Fremont area property valuations increased on average by 10 percent this year. Haller Lake/North Greenwood/Crown Hill area property values increased an average of 12 percent. The Assessor’s Office revalues all property annually and conducts a physical inspection of each property every six years.

University of Washington Center for Pediatric Dentistry still has a few spots open for its Anniversary Day of Service on Oct. 8, providing free dental exams, teeth cleaning, x-rays and fluoride/sealants for children ages 1-18. Call 206-543-5800 for an appointment.

The Municipal League of King Counties now has School Board candidate ratings on its website. The League rated more than 90 candidates for local elections.
