by | Aug 17, 2015

The inaugural Seattle Summer Parkways, which will close down seven miles of streets throughout Ballard and into Phinney-Greenwood on Sept. 19, needs hundreds of volunteers, from residents to businesses. (The Central District will have its own Summer Parkways on Sept. 12.)

Volunteer positions include: intersection management, community ambassadors, route patrols, mobile bike mechanics, information booth staff, event set-up and tear-down, and more. All volunteers receive free lunch and a t-shirt. Volunteer descriptions and sign-ups are online.

These free, all-ages celebrations will create expansive, temporary open space on Seattle’s streets, where thousands of friends, families, and visitors can participate in dozens of community-based activities, from skateboard demos, to puppeteers, to art activities to food truck dining. In addition to events, residents are encouraged to explore the open spaces by biking, running and walking.

Ballard: Saturday, September 19, 11 a.m. to 3p.m.

  • Seven miles of streets closed to traffic and 131 blocks to explore
  • Featured activities in seven locations including Loyal Heights Playfields, Salmon Bay Park, Ballard Corners Park, 14th Avenue Northwest Park Boulevard, Ballard Commons Park and the Sixth Avenue Pocket Park

Streets will be closed to through traffic (motorized vehicles), but open to local traffic. Each event will be anchored by dozens of activities hosted in parks along the route.

In addition to the signature activities, event organizers are encouraging participation by inviting residents along the route to host events of their own.
