A new component of Seattle’s annual summer tradition of Seafair will be a series of stand-up paddling competitions, including one at Green Lake.

The Northwest Paddling Series brings together five existing regional paddling races that will then culminate in the Seafair Northwest Paddling Championship on Aug. 1. The four-mile championship race will take place on the Seafair hydroplane race course on Lake Washington.

The top three male and female finishers of each of the five races (both amateur and professional) will qualify to race in the championship race and one male and one female grand champion will be crowned. The first race was on March 28 at Alderbrook Resort and Spa on Hood Canal. Next up is Gig Harbor Paddler’s Cup on April 11; Northwest Paddling Festival Challenge at Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah on May 9; M2S Alki Paddling Challenge on June 27; and the ZICO SUP Challenge at Green Lake on July 11.
