Phinney Ridge-based Cancer Lifeline, at 6522 Fremont Ave. N., is hosting its 11th annual fundraising luncheon next Thursday at 12 p.m. at the Westin Hotel downtown.
The emcee is Enrique Cerna of of KCTS Connects, and the keynote speaker is Molly Wizenberg, a prominent food blogger, author, columnist for Bon Appetit magazine, and Ballard restauranteur. Her 2009 book “A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes from My Kitchen Table,” chronicles her personal journey of food and nutrition during her father’s struggle with cancer.
Proceeds will benefit support services for patients, loved ones and caregivers whose lives are affected by cancer. The luncheon will highlight Cancer Lifeline’s mission to “optimize the quality of life for all people living with cancer,” and the important role that emotional, nutritional and financial support services provides.
What began as a 24-hour telephone support line in 1973 has evolved into a comprehensive support organization that provides support for individuals affected by cancer in 16 Western Washington counties. In addition to the 24-hour telephone Lifeline, exercise, nutrition and artistic expression classes, Cancer Lifeline administers the Komen Patient Assistance Fund, which provides financial support to low-income breast cancer patients for basic needs. This critical resource provides relief from the very real stress of economic hardship. Cancer Lifeline is also committed to increasing access to early detection services and treatment for the underserved American Indian and Alaska Native populations.
