Friday’s Artwalk & Summer Streets expected to bring thousands to the neighborhood

by | Aug 12, 2010

This month’s Art Up Artwalk will be much bigger than usual, since it’s paired with the annual Seattle Summer Streets program. Phinney/Greenwood Avenue will be closed to traffic from North 65th Street all the way to North 87th Street from 6-9 p.m. Friday (the cross streets of North 65th, North 80th and North 85th streets will remain open.)
More than three dozen businesses are participating in the Artwalk, with artist showings, live painting, and other special events. Summer Streets is adding dancing in the streets, a whiffle ball game, two Bubbleman performances, fire safety education and fire truck tours by the firefighters at Station 21, and a host of other fun stuff. Plus, Mayor Mike McGinn will be giving out awards for last month’s Walk Bike Ride challenge in front of Metropolis and Rising Stars at 7 p.m.
Here’s a short selection of Artwalk happenings. For a complete list, see the Artwalk website.
Inside the Greenwood Collective at 8537 Greenwood Ave. N., Suite 1, a number of art studios are participating. The folks at Bherd Studios will have muralists painting in the street outside. Urban Light Studios features “Venus Unveiled,” a “group show of female artists unveiling honesty and substance of strength. Plus “Wildlife Watch” in the Main Sp@ce featuring Barbara Fugate’s paintings & drawings of nature and wildlife.”
Also at Greenwood Collective, artist Yvonne Palermo celebrates the grand opening of her new studio with urban and surreal art by herself and visiting artist Larkin Surreal, plus live painting.

This month’s exhibition features a series of paintings, which seek to promote awareness of chronic pain as a legitimate health condition by drawing on my own experiences with it.

The Green Bean Coffeehouse celebrates its grand opening at 8533 Greenwood Ave. N. The Green Bean officially opened last month, but they’re celebrating Friday with a gala and silent auction.
Even though Greenwood Avenue opens up again to cars past North 87th Street, walk up a few blocks more to the Volunteers of America Community Resource Center (home of the Greenwood Food Bank) at 9041 Greenwood Ave. N. for their artwalk show, Art with Heart. They’ll have a special children’s volunteer opportunity, where kids can create greeting cards for their senior clients. Proceeds from photography and other art sales benefit Volunteers of America.
Tasty “delectable collectibles” at 7513 Greenwood Ave. N. is hosting a “Garden of Earthly Delights” art show inside, and a tea party outside.
You can make a free craft project at A Muse, 7107 Greenwood Ave. N., from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Avanti Art & Design, 7317 Greenwood Ave. N., collaborated with Greenwood’s 826 Seattle, a free writing and tutoring program for kids, on a “Masquerade” exhibit. There’s also live painting by Dave Varbioff.

Metropolis and neighbor Rising Stars at 7321 Greenwood Ave. N. feature wood block prints with a “Day of the Dead” theme by Zanetka Kralova Gawronski, and ReBots, original signed art sculptures created individually from recycled and found objects by Susan Wiegardt, plus metal & gemstone jewelry by Maria LaFrance.
