One of the best things about the City of Seattle is its Department of Neighborhoods, which gives matching grants to neighborhood groups wanting to do something nice for their area, such as improving a park or traffic calming measures on residential streets.
You have until Feb. 27 to apply for the 2010 funding cycle. The city has set aside $1.2 million for the Neighborhood Funds Projects. Each project can apply for up to $90,000 for street or parks improvements such as sidewalk repair, traffic circles and traffic calming, sidewalks, school zone speed limit signs and playground improvements.
District Councils will review each proposal and submit five from each district. The Parks Department and Department of Transportation will review each one for feasibility. Recommended projects will be announced in August.
