Day of the Dead approaches

by | Nov 6, 2008

Halloween may be over but Phinney’s Day of the Dead is coming up Friday night. Día de los Muertos starts at 6:30 p.m. with a candelight procession from 75th and Phinney and ends at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave N. There’s a community altar upstairs in the art gallery that people have been working on for a while now (check it out now if you want). There’ll be live music, hot chocolate and craft activities.
This traditional Mexican festival honors the deceased and the connection between the living and dead. Legend has it that on Día de los Muertos the veil between life and death is at its thinnest, and spirits of loved ones can be lured back by offerings at the family altar. Altars traditionally hold photographs of the dead, plus food, drink, candles, flowers, sugar skulls, and personal mementoes.
