Spruce up Greenwood Gardens and mentor a teen

by | Oct 18, 2008

The group, 3rd Saturday Greenwood Gardens, is hoping to get some help Saturday with weeding from 9:30 a.m. to noon around the North Seattle Boys & Girls Club. It’s their intent to pair up teens with volunteer adult gardeners who can share their expertise and help the kids develop work skills. There’s even the opportunity for teens to get a $15 stipend. Here’s more info from Kate Martin:

3rd Saturday Greenwood Gardens builds off of the good work and great tradition of the Friends of Greenwood Park 3rd Saturday work parties. We’ll meet at the North Seattle Boys & Girls Club and do weeding around the club. Every 3rd Saturday, we’ll be pairing up neighborhood teenagers with volunteer neighborhood adult gardeners to tend our neighborhood’s parks and open spaces from 9:30 – noon. (I have enough money to sponsor 5 teenagers who will each earn a stipend of $15.00 to work with an adult this Saturday morning and could use help with this part.)

This is a chance for the teens to develop their work skills and community service skills and a chance for adults to share their expertise and time with a neighborhood teen. I’m sure the time spent together will be mutually beneficial. If you are interested in sponsoring the teens in one of the coming months, it would be great. The goal is to have at least 10 teens a month doing this so somehow raising $150 a month needs to happen.

Please join us for a simple barbecue at the Boys & Girls Club at noon after the work party for anyone who is out gardening our community spaces that morning in Greenwood Park, The North Seattle Boys & Girls Club, our main streets, or elsewhere.
