Support Greenwood Food Resource Center during Hunger Action Month

by | Aug 22, 2016

The new Greenwood Food Resource Center is kicking off a month-long campaign during September’s Hunger Action Month to meet increased demand by neighbors in need.

The Volunteers of America Greenwood Food Bank was a vital part of our community before closing in March, after the organization sold its building at 9041 Greenwood Ave. N.and moved operations to the new North Greenwood Food Bank in Bitter Lake. In late April, Wallingford-based FamilyWorks and The Salvation Army opened the Greenwood Food Resource Center at 9501 Greenwood Ave. N. to fill the gap in service by providing healthy, fresh food to hundreds of households in our area.

One neighbor who utilizes the Greenwood Food Resource Center told food bank staffers, “The new food bank has helped enormously. The food I’m able to get there allows me to put a little money aside for my health care costs. It’s been a lifesaver.”

Since opening, the Greenwood Food Resource Center has seen its weekly numbers increase from serving 56 households to 105 households each week.

FamilyWorks is kicking off a campaign during Hunger Action Month to help pay for this growing demand. You can donate here. Just $25 can provide nutritious food for a family for one week.

Every donation, up to $3,000, will be matched dollar-for-dollar because of a match pool created by FamilyWorks Board Members and local businesses.

You can see an interesting video about the space as it prepared to open in April.

The Greenwood Food Resource Center is open to clients from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday at the The Salvation Army at 9501 Greenwood Ave. N.
