Earlier this month, the Phinney Neighborhood Association was awarded $50,000 from the Department of Neighborhoods to select artists to decorate the Business District’s signal boxes. These benign structures are metal boxes mounted at an intersection that houses the electronic equipment responsible for controlling the traffic lights, of which we have almost 2 dozen in the district.
The PNA is inviting artists to apply for the Reimagining PhinneyWood Signal Boxes project, a unique opportunity to transform ordinary infrastructure into extraordinary public art. This vibrant initiative, funded in part by a Neighborhood Matching Fund award seeks creative, local talent to contribute to the beautification and celebration of the PhinneyWood community.
Selected artists will create original designs that reflect the theme “Wander PhinneyWood,” telling stories that resonate with the diverse culture, landmarks, and spirit of the PhinneyWood community. The chosen designs will be reproduced as high-quality vinyl wraps to beautify nineteen signal boxes located between Woodland Park Zoo and Holman Road.
Artists from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with a particular emphasis on supporting emerging, BIPOC and local artists. This juried project will provide both exposure and a lasting legacy, with original artwork featured in a special exhibition during the PhinneyWood Summer Arts Festival in June 2025.
Through this initiative, the signal boxes will be transformed into a visual tapestry celebrating the PhinneyWood community. The durable vinyl wraps will preserve the vibrancy of the artwork for 5-10 years, creating a permanent walking tour that encourages exploration and connection within the neighborhood.
The official unveiling of the signal boxes will coincide with the 2025 PhinneyWood Summer Arts Festival, where participating artists will introduce their work to the community.
“Wander PhinneyWood” inspires artists to explore the area’s unique character and create designs that encourage others to discover new landmarks, support local businesses, and experience the neighborhood in fresh and meaningful ways.
