When you walk through the doorway at the Greenwood Senior Center (GSC) you’re greeted from the front desk with a wide smile and hearty hello from a volunteer like Pat warmly welcoming you.
In the lobby, you’ll likely see a gentleman sipping coffee and reading The Seattle Times. You may hear laughter and music wafting up the stairs from the Gathering Place. At a table nearby, there’s a group of women chatting and working on a jigsaw puzzle or playing cards after they’ve enjoyed the GSC lunch program.
Speaking of lunch, what is that amazing aroma coming from Fannie’s Kitchen? What did Trevor and crew serve for lunch? Looks like it was wild-caught slow-roasted salmon, served over creamy polenta, with an organic salad and seasonal fruit.
“The GSC is always buzzing with conversation, laughter, and opportunities to connect,” shares MJ Jurgensen, Director of Senior Programs. “Throughout the day there are any number of activities and events: Tai Chi, the All-Present Song Circle, Medicare Counseling, Brain Games, various support groups, the Hot Meal Program, the Bridge group, jewelry making, haircuts, improv class, watercolor painting, language classes, line dancing, lectures, music and more. There’s something for everyone here at the GSC!”
Coming out of the pandemic, we have seen a surge in demand for social connection, opportunities to give back, and programs that support and prioritize physical, mental, and emotional health. That’s the Power of Community! And it’s the primary reason I joined the PNA Board of Directors. I’ve had a 15+ year relationship with the Greenwood Senior Center through my work in the field of aging.
The GSC is a special, magical place. It’s an “inclusive community that provides social, physical, and educational activities focused on the needs of older adults. We work to fight isolation, build camaraderie, and enrich each other’s lives.”
From Welcome to Wellness is the theme for this year’s Power of Community fundraiser, an opportunity to learn more about and support the kindness, connection, and genuine warmth that embodies this community.
The Power of Community is an annual event to raise funds to sustain these vital programs, services, and connections. The goal of this year’s campaign is to raise $100,000 that supports the Greenwood Senior Center, Memory Loss and PNA Village programs.
This year the Power of Community fundraiser will be held at the Swedish Club, 1920 Dexter Ave N, Seattle. Join us in celebration and support on October 10, from 11:30 to 1:00. CLICK HERE to buy your tickets.
