If you visit the former Tangerine Thai space between Ada’s and Windy City Pie these days, you’ll find a wonderful new addition to the bustling PhinneyWood food scene: Kipos Greek restaurant. Recently opened by Constantinos “Dino” Bekris, Kipos is dedicated to high-quality, modern Greek street food.
Dino was born in Greece, but raised in a restaurant family in Seattle. In addition to the legendary Costa’s on the Ave in the University District, he has aunts and uncles throughout Seattle that have owned Greek-style restaurants and eateries. While many of the ‘old-school’ Greek restaurants are starting to fade away as owners retire, Dino hopes to breathe new life into his native cuisine in a very food-focused city.
Kipos is about doing Greek Food “a little more honestly”, according to Dino. “There has been a lot of evolution in the kitchen in Greece that is not well represented here in Seattle.” Indeed, according to one of their early online reviews, a patron commented “it is actually a proper Greek Gyro — not the compressed cone mystery meet you find at most of the pretends-to-be-Greek gyro joints around town.”
So if you’re looking for Greek food that is delicious (I’ve eaten there four times), approachable, and different than you’re perhaps used to, drop on by Kipos at 5914 Phinney Ave N – open every day but Monday from 11am – 8pm.
