The Phinney Ridge Community Council is hosting Councilmember Dan Strauss this Tuesday for their monthly community Zoom meeting. D5 Councilmember Strauss is Chair of the Land Use Committee, which recommends City policy on zoning and development policies which affect our neighborhood. Councilmember Strauss was also a participant shaping the city-wide budget for the coming two years.
There are several policies that will be considered this year by Strauss’ committee that will greatly affect the character of our neighborhoods. This Tuesday is your chance to focus the conversation on subjects of interest relevant to our neighborhood. You can email questions in advance to [email protected]
Some topics will include:
- Creating affordable housing. The height and density of buildings was increased with HALA a few years ago. HB-1110 in the State Legislature is being considered to further allow 6 units on all property no matter the current zoning. Some feel that affordable housing is being replaced by market rate (expensive) high-density buildings with minimal increase of affordable and/or low-income housing.
- Seattle Initiative 135 is being proposed to create a “public housing public developer” with a special election this February 14.
- Design Review. The City is considering eliminating neighborhood input for design review of all commercial buildings. Design Review is often the only dialogue between neighborhoods and developers. What role should communities play regarding major proposed development in their area?
- Public Safety. Budgeting has eliminated community-based policing although break-ins and theft plague business and homes. Is there a better solution?
