Don’t panic – A la Mode Pies not going anywhere soon

by | Feb 18, 2022

Some of the dreaded NOTICE OF PROPOSED LAND USE ACTION signs appeared on the building that houses our beloved A la Mode Pies today, perhaps sending shockwaves of anxiety and hysteria through the Phinneywood community.

Fear not! A la Mode, which has been blessing us with exquisite concoctions in the space at 5819 Phinney Ave N for over a decade now, will be in the building through at least April 2023 and possibly a bit longer. Owner Chris Porter also recently opened a location just a mile down into Ballard last year, in anticipation of this change.

Homestead Community Land Trust is building new for-sale homes on the site, with permanently affordable homes priced for those such as teachers, healthcare workers, transit drivers, nonprofit employees and other workforce neighbors who are priced out of the current housing market. They will develop a five-story condominium building with approximately 29 homes, of which 16 will permanently affordable.

There will also be commercial space in the bottom of the new building, which Porter acknowledges he is in negotiations to purchase. “I don’t want to leave this neighborhood. I love this neighborhood.”

So – best case scenario would be that we have to drive an extra mile for our pies for a year or two, but then A la Mode returns in a beautiful, new, and permanent setting to supply us all with the best pies and ice creams outside of mom’s kitchen.
